Along with an inevitable chill, thick sweaters, and the falling of leaves that autumn gifts us with comes my favorite part of the year: autumn fashion. Whilst some people think all that means is the looming of winter on the horizon, to me it means deep golds, rich burgundies, and the chance to wear some of my fall favorites once more.
The first step to flawless make-up is a flawless base. Pixi, Skindinavia and Organic Surge are tried and trusted (particularly the cult coveted Glow Mist, perfect for refreshing tired and weary skin throughout the day); it’s the Alpha H Liquid Gold Rose, however, that is an absolute must for me, particularly during the dryer months. Used two to three times a week, this carefully formulated exfoliant has Glycolic acid and licorice, proven to reduce the appearance and occurrence of fine lines, wrinkles, acne and scarring. All it takes is one step (and one night) to invigorate the skin, leaving it plumper and brighter. The Rose edition is even better than the normal version, believe it or not, because it boasts “aromatic botanicals” and “moisture-binding” essentials all whilst retaining the essence of the original (and, really, I’m a sucker for anything pink).
With our skincare checked off, we move onto the base. Now this can be a tad tricky, especially with our golden tans from summer fading and our skin requiring a spoonful more of moisture to help it along. L.A. Girl’s Pro Coverage foundation has a smooth, build-able and dewy finish. Its long-wearing formula means that touch-ups will be kept to a minimum and (the cherry on top) it will definitely not take a huge chunk out of your trusty credit card. That leaves a little extra for Sigma’s Mini Power Haul, a set of three eye brushes that make blending a total dream. Coupled with I Heart Makeup’s Golden Bar Palette (a friendly and inexpensive dupe for Too Faced’s Chocolate Bar series), the combination of deep browns, glittery golds and warm oranges makes for the ultimate autumn palette.
Then, finally, comes the very best bit of all: lip colors. There’s nothing like picking out a wine red that complements your look best, giving you all the confidence and more to strut down any street like you own it. As it’s hard for me to choose just one favorite, you’ll have to endure a (heavily downsized) list of the formulas and shades I like the most. Jeffree Star’s Unicorn Blood and Redrum are rich shades of red with a bit of edge to them, ideal with a smokier, messier eye look, whereas theBalm’s Meet Matt(e) Hughes liquid lipsticks come in a delicious set, ranging from shocking to classic (or, as I prefer to think of it, recently-turned-vampire to conventional-twentieth-century-beauty). When it comes to a more traditional lipstick, Makeup Revolution’s Exclusive and Diamond Life are hydrating formulas without the stick, both colors that I love to pair with fluttery lashes and the darkest possible eyeliner.
But let’s not stop there, right? After all, what’s an utterly flawless face without the hair to match? Drier weather doesn’t just take its toll on skin, guys! You’ve got to step up the hair care too, and so you can trust me to let you in on a secret: Moroccanoil. There’s nothing this range doesn’t deal with, from voluminous to smoothing, curly to pin-straight. My personal preferences are the Texture Clay, the best way to control frizz and style flexibly sans the grease and stick, and the much loved Original Treatment, a formula blended to achieve the sleekest, shiniest hair since Blake Lively. Moroccanoil incorporates argan oil in all their products, rich in antioxidants that will have you looking like you’ve just stepped off the covers of Vogue. And, in the end, isn’t that the universal dream?
